1940 – Hattie McDaniel became the first African American to be nominated and win the Academy Award (Oscar). McDaniel won Best Supporting Actress for her role as “Mammy” in 1939 film “Gone With the Wind.”

1942 – The Army Air Corp’s all African American 99th Pursuit Squadron (known as the Tuskegee Airmen), later designated a fighter squadron, was activated at Tuskegee Institute.
