1900 – For a Lincoln birthday celebration, James Weldon Johnson writes the lyrics for “Lift Every Voice and Sing” with music by his brother J. Rosamond Johnson.  “Lift Every Voice and Sing” is widely known as the Black National Anthem.

1909 – The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) was founded by 60 black and white citizens.
